10. Ponta de São Lourenço

Ponta de São Lourenço is the most eastern end of Madeira Island, occupying nine kilometers in length, in the shape of a peninsula, at the end of which are the islet of Desembarcadouro (islet of Metade or Cevada) and the islet of Farol ( islet of Ponta de São Lourenço or de Fora).

In this area, Baía d'Abra assumes a particular landscape relief, which, due to its configuration and great extension, provides excellent anchorage conditions. To the west, after the Quinta do Lorde marina, is the picturesque Prainha – a small beach with dark sand. Overlooking this is Morro da Piedade, a volcanic cone, where a chapel allusive to Nossa Senhora da Piedade was erected in the 16th century. To the north of Prainha, the Dunas da Piedade stand out. This dune building holds Quaternary fossils, 300,000 years old, constituting unique records in Europe. Fossilized roots can be found here, which indicate the ancestral existence of much more abundant and larger vegetation than the one that now characterizes the area.

Ponta de São Lourenço is a Natural Monument that integrates the Network of Natural Monuments of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
